6 Best Soccer Finishing Drills

The whole aspect of the game of soccer is beautiful and captivating, but the very aspect that gives it its whole essence is goal scoring. In order word finishing.  The game of soccer wouldn’t be the same if there's wasn’t goal scoring. Every move, every tactic, every setup, every structural approach to the game is to achieve one aim, to outscore the opponent. Because that's how the winner emerges.

To get the better of the opponent means to score goals, and to score goals you don’t just need strikers who can strike the ball properly but strikers who can make the right decisions while under pressure and even in the most unpleasant situations.   The game of soccer has seen some extraordinary and cold-blooded finishers. Some of them are extremely talented right from the onset, but they got to the very top via consistent practice and the desire to refine each aspect of their game. Especially the finishing.

The World Cup Game for End-of-Practice Fun

The best-selling book "Freakonomics" explains that we live in an incentive-driven society. If we dangle incentives, people are more inclined to work harder toward accomplishing the goal in front of them.

Take this thought into youth soccer practice. Young players love being rewarded for a good practice. But what can you do?

This game is one that's proven to be a popular end-of-practice incentive for a job well done. And it's easy to play.

The World Cup Game is a great way to play a different kind of soccer game and reward a good day. Set aside 10-15 minutes at the end of practice--if they deserve the reward--and turn it into a fun competition.>

How to Play

Make sure players are divided up into multiple teams of two. One player (or a coach) will be the goalkeeper not on a team.

Have each team pick a country that they will represent. The United States will be popular, sure, but kids will have fun choosing different countries that they will play as in this "World Cup."

Using half of the field and one ball, have all the teams on the field when the game begins.

World Cup - Shooting Drill

This World Cup shooting drill is a fun soccer drill that the younger kids will love. It is called World Cup because you play small tournament style knockout rounds and finish the game with one team standing.

This shooting and finishing game is one of those soccer drills that you will want to have in your arsenal. This game is a very fun soccer drill that your kids will love playing.

Drill Setup

Start by placing a goalkeeper in a full size goal.

Divide the remaining players into even groups of 3-4 players per group. Give each team a different color and a country such as yellow = Brazil, red = US, white= England etc.

Drill Instructions

Each team  will be working together to score and deny other teams from scoring as well.

Once a team has scored they take a seat by the goal waiting for the next round.

The last team to score each round is out of the game.

When you get down to the last two teams 2 goals for one team wins the "World Cup".

Remember to have fun in this soccer shooting drill.

Backyard Soccer - World Cup Passing!

This backyard soccer game is great for coaching kids how to pass the soccer ball correctly and accurately. I have used this drill for adult soccer players as a quick, relaxed warm up game and it always goes down well.

Preparation

Take a look at the diagram below for World Cup Passing - backyard soccer style. You will see that there are cones in the grid with players either side. A ball placed on the cone with another ball at a players feet.

Explanation

This soccer game is great fun for this age group and also ideal at improving players passing technique and accuracy.

The basic idea to this backyard soccer drill will be for the player to pass the ball at their feet toward the soccer ball balanced on top of the cone. If the player knocks the ball off they will receive two points, if they touch the ball without it falling off they receive one point. If the ball falls off then it must be replaced. Time the game and give the kids a couple of minutes to improve their accuracy.

There are plenty of progression ideas for this drill. I always like to start without the soccer ball on the center cone and allow the players to pass th
