Fire hydrant capital of the world

Albertville, nicknamed "Fire Hydrant Capital of the World," is the largest city in Marshall County.

The city's name is derived from Thomas A. Albert, one of the first area residents. The city is atop Sand Mountain, a plateau about 25 miles wide and 75 miles long. Albertville and the surrounding area are rich in Indian history, according to u-s-history.com.

Albertville was a hunting ground for the Indians until the early 1800s. The city of Albertville was first settled around 1850. On January 13, 1860, the first post office was established and, in 1891, Albertville was officially incorporated.

One of the worst tornados in Alabama history destroyed the town in 1908, but it was rebuilt. 100 years to the day, another massive tornado hit the town in 2008. The latter tornado did a lot of property damage, but caused few casualties.

The first hospital was built in 1917.

Albertville’s nickname "Fire Hydrant Capital of the World" refers to the output of the Mueller Company. ompany's four-millionth fire hydrant, made in 2016.

"’Busted Plug Plaza’ is among Sky’s most widely-recognized and impressive works. Four stories in height and weighing 675,000 pounds, it is located on Taylor St., between Marion and Bull Sts., in the same parking lot (AgFirst Farm Credit Bank) as Sky’s acclaimed ‘Tunnelvision.’

Sky proposed the sculpture to the city of Columbia in 1999, and spent the next year designing and directing the project. After architectural drafting, review approval and permitting, off-site component fabrication and on-site construction took 14 months to complete. For the entire duration of the preparation and assembly process, the project was veiled under an enormous grey tarp, leaving the residents of downtown Columbia tantalized with wonder, curiosity and perhaps even fear.

Over 75 people contributed their talents to the realization of this project. Sky’s design-build team consisted of architect Robert J. Probst, structural engineer Jimmy Chao (Chao and Associates), and general contractor Jimmy Copeland (J.F. Copeland Construction Inc.).

‘Busted Plug Plaza’ was initially conceived by Sky circa 1980 as ‘Downtown Fountain,’ a pyra

Albertville has much to be proud of, to wit:

Albertville, Alabama – Nickel-Plated Fire Hydrant
Outside the Albertville Chamber of Commerce stands a salute to Albertville’s legacy as the “fire hydrant capital of the world,” a polished nickel hydrant was placed on a pedestal of marble there to celebrate the Mueller Co. producing its one-millionth hydrant. [from Roadside America]

What Allee has to say about this:

The fact that any city should be declared “Fire Hydrant Capital of the World” makes It THE capital in the state of Kitsch.

This continues my fascination with Albertville that started with the shelves in the grocery store. http://www.alleewillis.com/awmok/kitschenette/2009/12/06/foodland-of-albertville-alabama/

I love that this chrome plated hydrant was the one millionth one produced. I only wish they were all still located in Albertville.

More Albertville please!
