I'm curious about this "majority": do you mean the majority of people who plot, write, and draw creator-owned comics? From my limited understanding of North American comics, that's not a lot of people.
I haven't read all the Scott Pilgrim comics, but I rate him highly for:
a nice combination of humor and action.
artwork with personal style
a series with a strong narrative identity. There have been many such since, but not so many before SP
best of all, whether the credit goes to O'Malley or to Oni, Scott Pilgrim black and white comics were affordable and portable.
Movies seem to slow authors down, so I am not too surprised that there was post-SP gap, and he's well into his post-SP career by now, so he's earned his professional comics creator wings.

In one of the bigger announcements this week, Bryan Lee O’Malley has revealed plans for a brand new original graphic novel.
This week, Bryan Lee O’Malley will launch “Snotgirl” with artist Leslie Hung, but that isn’t slowing him down. Announced today by Entertainment Weekly, “Worst World” will be his graphic novel follow up to the much praised “Seconds.” The book will focus on 30-something Benny and 20-something Aubrey but other than that, nothing about the plot was revealed. This will also be the start of a graphic novel trilogy with each book coming in at least 300 pages each. As usual, O’Malley will write and draw (assisted by Jason Fischer) and Nathan Fairbairn will handle the coloring. As of now there is no release date for “Worst World” but O’Malley will be at SDCC signing a print of this promo image.
“Scott Pilgrim” is my everything and, while I’m interested in “Snotgirl,” I’m more excited to see O’Malley return with a longer graphic novel series like this. The promo image has all the makings of a perfect Bryan Lee O’Malley book. You’ve
