20-year-old Montana hunter's Missouri River Breaks bighorn ram ties world record

Since Justin Sheedy pulled the trigger on a huge bighorn ram last hunting season in the Missouri River Breaks it’s been a waiting game.

The sheep, shot in Hunting District 680 north of the Missouri River, was officially scored by a Boone and Crockett Club judge last December. Based on those measurements, the ram tied the current hunter-shot world record. With a score of 208 3/8, Sheedy’s ram is in a dead heat with Guinn Crousen’s bighorn ram shot in 2000 in the Luscar Mountain region of Alberta, Canada.

Those two rams differ from the top three bighorn sheep in the world, which were all found dead instead of hunter-killed. That includes a dead bighorn sheep picked up on Wild Horse Island in Flathead Lake, which was officially certified earlier this year at 216 3/8 — No. 1 in the world.

Although Sheedy, 20, a Montana State University civil engineering student, knew after chasing sheep for three weeks spread across five trips that the ram he shot was big, the reality of just how big the sheep was didn’t hit until it was officially scored.

One score isn’t enough, however. All new Boone and Crocke

The World record was picked up in 2016 in Montana.

Scoring an incredible 216 ⅜ inches, this beautiful ram is owned by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

John Day Canyon produces new world record California Bighorn

A new world record California Bighorn Sheep has been declared and it came from Oregon's John Day canyon, outside of Condon.

The record ram was harvested last year in the lower John Day river region by Mike Kinney of Spokane, Washington. Mr. Kinney won his tag in the state tag raffle and was guided by Eden Ridge Outfitters employees including owner John McCollum and Chanse Bennett of Condon.

Safari Club International recognizes the California Bighorn Sheep in its own category and announced that the measurement score of over 191 5/8 inches, made it a recognized world record.

The Boone and Crockett organization does not separate California from Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep. Oregon has both species. Total tags allocated in 2023 were under 70 statewide.

Guide John McCullom who has harvested Oregon bighorns himself, credited his grandfather for instilling his passion for hunting. "My grandfather built the first culvert traps for bears." He shared. The design is still being used today. "I went on my first bear hunt when I was 3 years old."

McCullom gratefully acknowledged the assistance of Chanse Bennett and the private
