This modern facility opened in 2012 and showcases the Mayan heritage with dynamic exhibits and interactive displays. And with rotating and traveling exhibits, there is always something new to discover.
Located on the northern side of Merida, the striking modern museum is itself a wonder to behold, designed by the renowned architects Josefina Rivas Acevedo, Enrique Duarte Aznar, Ricardo Combaluzier Medina, and William Ramírez Pizarro. In 2012, the building won the Partnerships Awards for its forward-thinking design.
But there's more to the museum than its architectural elements. Visitors come face-to-face with over 1,160 artifacts spread across four main exhibit halls. The displays reflect various aspects of Mayan life, from their profound knowledge of astronomy to their intricate art and deep spiritual beliefs.
The interactive displays utilize modern technology, making learning about the Spanish conquest and Mayan culture fun and exciting.

Mediante una impresionante estructura metálica que alude al ramaje de la ceiba, los arquitectos buscaron representar la unión entre pasado y presente en un espacio físico construido para ser percibido como ilimitado, fusionando modernas técnicas constructivas, tales como la cimbra deslizante —herramienta necesaria para formar una figura geométrica consolidada mediante el deslizamiento continuo de una cimbra alrededor de la masa plástica del concreto— con las heredadas de la época prehispánica, como el uso de la tierra caliza o sahkab.
Es por ello que, siempre con la ceiba como referencia, la bodega de colecciones y la de tránsito —que resguarda exposiciones temporales— provistas de óptimas condiciones de temperatura y humedad para la conservación y manejo de piezas, se distribuyen como gigantescas raíces bajo el museo, donde están también las áreas de investigación, catalogación, restauración y curaduría.
