What is the Greatsword?

The Greatsword is a two-handed melee weapon that
provides massive damage and great self-sustain in close combat fights
. It's the first weapon in New World to scale off equally Strength and Dexterity, so it can be paired with various weapon types (such as hatchet, war hammer, great axe, bow, musket, rapier, etc.), making it
the most versatile weapon for lots of PvE and PvP end-game builds
. So can we aim for the best build in the game and use the Greatsword as a primary weapon? Absolutely!

From our testing, the Greatsword is
one of the strongest weapons in the game
, especially if you pair it with a strength-scaling weapon, such as a War Hammer, Great Axe, or Hatchet. If you combine it with the right weapon, your character benef

Artifact Additions & Magnify

You will want to add a gem slot to the Serenity artifact at the gypsum kiln. The featherweight’s additional perk will be health as listed above.

Great Axe PvE Builds

In PvE the Great Axe is known for its AoE damage output and ability to clump enemies together with its pulls and roots. It is most commonly seen as a "Trash Clearing" weapon as it shines when there are large packs of enemies to hit. It has very impactful cooldowns and can reset them very quickly. Its damage on single-target can still be great, but it is not typically needed for boss fights. Its PvE builds will play to its strengths in most cases and pair it with a strong single-target weapon for bosses, and use the Great Axe for everything else.

Please note
: When it comes to PvE, it is best practice to use the Serenity Greatsword artifact, as it provides a handful of amazing perks that will help you maximize your overall damage.

Greatsword and Great Axe DPS

This is a great build for having all aspects of DPS covered. You can deal some of the highest damage in New World with the Greatsword for single-target fights, and the Great Axe can be used to clear trash packs, deal AoE damage, or it can be used to CC and group enemies together.

Greatsword Overview

The Greatsword is a weapon that has some of the best viability in both PvP and PvE, and it will almost always function as a primary damage weapon (with a few exceptions). It is easy to play, has some of the highest burst damage potential in the game, and has very impactful abilities.

In PvP, it can support highly mobile dive assassin builds that can be very rewarding and forgiving. In PvE, it will be a great source of single-target and AoE damage, making it always a great choice for any DPS role. It has plenty of survivability, even though it takes increased damage in Onslaught stance, but its Defiance abilities and passives can make it more defensive as needed.

In most cases, if you are utilizing the Greatsword as your primary weapon, you will likely want to use the Serenity or Crescent's Wave artifcat weapon, as they are both extremely powerful options that will allow you to maximize overall damage output. This may change depending on the build you're going for, but in most cases, you will likely be using one of these two weapons if you're use a Greatsword as your primary weapon.
