Prescott’s World’s Oldest Rodeo

Since 1888, Prescott Frontier Days, Inc. has presented the annual World’s Oldest Rodeo® at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds. For 2025, the rodeo will be performed Monday, July 1st through Sunday, July 7th. Join us to see your favorite events, including steer wrestling, bareback riding, tie-down roping, women’s breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, team roping, women’s barrel racing, bull riding and other great entertainment!

The following article was originally written by Danny Freeman,who is the author of the book "World's Oldest Rodeo." This article has been edited by Kathy Krause.


The first formalized ‘rodeo’ was held in Prescott, Arizona Territory during the 4th of July celebration in l888 and has been a yearly event ever since. That first ‘rodeo’ was called a "Cowboy Tournament". It was added to the 4th of July activities that year to entice more people to come to town to enjoy the festivities and to spend money with the merchants. There was a planning committee of merchants and professional people to organize and stage the events including the cowboy contests. Admission was charged to help pay for prizes and other expenses. That first ‘rodeo’ was a success; contestants and spectators were thrilled and the entire event was documented and written up in the
Arizona Journal-Miner
newspaper.

2024 World’s Oldest Rodeo® – Performance #5

The 137th annual World’s Oldest Rodeo® is presented by Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc. Featuring a week-long extravaganza of world-class rodeo action and family-friendly entertainment, it’s Prescott’s premier event of the year. Takes place each year over the 4th of July weekend with eight performances. Gates open two hours before each performance. Arrive early to enjoy live music, shopping, and food. Mutton Bustin’ starts at 6:00 PM.

World's Oldest Rodeo: world record in Prescott, Arizona
