A positive school climate promotes school safety, student self-esteem, emotional well-being, mental health, and lower incidences of substance abuse, student absenteeism, and suspensions. In 2013 current principal Claudette Christie replaced longtime principal Kim Wanliss. Christie was previously assistant principal. She maintains that all adults at WATCH go the extra mile to support students and improve the school. "I clean classrooms, pick up garbage, do book clubs.... We do whatever needs to be done to keep the school in order," Christie says.
WATCH is located in the Thomas Jefferson Educational Campus in East New York. Although attendance has been slowly improving, it remains below the citywide average, and more than half the student body is chronically absent. There is an attendance teacher who is in charge of completing home visits in order to address this. According to the school's Quality Review, WATCH has embraced a new approach to discipline, aiming to implement more restorative methods rather than relying on detentions and suspensions.
Academically, there are three different areas of focus: Medical Science, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Sports Management.
